According to Football Italia, reigning MLS Cup holders Toronto FC could be in talks to sign Dutch defender, Gregory van der Wiel.
The 29-year-old is currently playing in Serie A with Cagliari, however he has featured just six times this season.
The former Dutch international began his career at Ajax, where he spent five years before joining French powerhouse Paris Saint Germain. After four years in the French capital he moved to Turkish side Fenerbahce. That move didn’t work out so he joined Cagliari in the summer for 1million euros.
Having only made six appearances since signing for the Italian side, van der Wiel could be looking for a way out, already.
The word is that Toronto FC are in the market for a right back following the departure of Steven Beitashour who signed for MLS new-boys LAFC.
van der Wiel would be an expensive addition, no doubt. But his experience is surely invaluable. He’s a man who has played in a World Cup final in 2010, albeit being a runner up.
I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on the potential signing for TFC, worth it?
