The home opener for the Seattle Sounders’ 2018 season did not have a first choice line-up. They lost 1-0 to an expansion team and it could have been even worse.
Why would a veteran MLS team do that?
CONCACAF Champions league.
Sounders had LigaMX side, Chivas Guadalajara come up to visit them. Chivas are 16th in their respective league.
Don’t get it twisted, Chivas are a very good team. They have striker, Pulido and very fast players on the wings like Brizuela and Lopez who know how to punish teams.
Just like the home opener, the away team came out swinging and nearly got one in the back of the net. Stefan Frei, Sounders’ goalkeeper made sure to do everything he could to keep it zeroes.
After the 15-minute mark the two teams started to settle in. The atmosphere was amazing, with nearly a 50/50 split of supporters. Loud Chivas and Seattle Sounders chants playing out their own battle in the stands.
Sounders missed some great chances to get ahead and that easily could come back to haunt them. With fast and fearless players like Bwana and Wingo, Sounders kept the Chivas back line honest. Thankfully Roldan was cleaning up a lot of the midfield.
Chivas were overlapping fiercely and it started to look like they might’ve been the ones to get that first goal.
Clint Dempsey, even though he squandered at least two easy chances, proved why he is still a big game calibre player.
In the 78′ minute, he delivered a simple slot in goal. With smart service from Wingo, the ball was delivered perfectly to the top of the box and Dempsey finished.
It wasn’t the best performance at home and those wasted chances in front of goal could haunt the team in Rave Green. Keeping it zeroes for the away is huge.
Sounders head down to Mexico next week, March 14th for the second leg.
