D.C. United defeated New England Revolution last night, making it three wins in a week as they look to shake up the Eastern Conference and put pressure on those currently occupying the playoff places.
Head Coach Ben Olsen was delighted with his side’s performances during the nine-point overhaul and credited their efforts:
“It was a long and great week for the team. I asked a lot from these guys both mentally and physically… Whether it was the preparation or the minutes they put in, it was a long week for the players. They dug in and there was some great and entertaining soccer throughout the week.”
As for last night’s win, Olsen was impressed with his team’s ability to deal with New England’s physicality:
“What I’m pleased with today is that we had to dig in and show a physical presence… Something our team haven’t dealt with in the greatest way over the last year-and-a-half. That’s what [New England] do, they came here to pick a fight and we did well at matching a very physical team.”
Club captain, Wayne Rooney, has had a great influence on the team since his arrival from Everton. He says his teammates are brimming with confidence:
“Confidence is high right now. I thought today in the first half we played some of the best football you’ll see in the league. The second half was tougher and we dug in. Good to get a clean sheet, good performance all round.”
Midfielder, Luciano Acosta, has benefited from Rooney’s influence and is in red-hot form. He expressed his enjoyment when asked about how the team is playing right now:
“Obviously we are enjoying it a lot. Winning is something we want to be consistent in doing. We need to be confident and keep doing what we’re doing.”
Next up for D.C. United is a game on the road against New York Red Bulls before back-to-back home games against Philadelphia Union and Atlanta United. The Red Bulls will provide a stern test for Ben Olsen’s side, they’re well drilled and sitting pretty at the top end of the Eastern Conference.
