Major League Soccer’s Rivalry Week gets underway on Wednesday with a Hudson River Derby as NYCFC host New York Red Bulls. What better way to prepare than looking at the best goals from previous meetings?
NYCFC 0-7 New York Red Bulls… Sorry City fans, but I have to mention this one. Despite seven goals being scored in this game, none of them were spectacular – quite sloppy to be honest. The standout goal was Bradley Wright-Phillips’ overhead kick:
NYCFC received another spanking from the Red Bulls in July 2016, but it didn’t stop Tommy McNamara from unleashing a rocket and arguably the best goal ever scored in a Hudson River Derby:
Jack Harrison, now a Leeds United loanee, scored some beauties during his time in the big apple. This finish at the Red Bull Arena in 2017 stands out:
David Villa completed his first MLS hat-trick when the Red Bulls came to Yankee Stadium in August 2017. The second goal was something rather special and one even New York Red Bulls’ fans should admire:
This isn’t a goal that is pleasing on the eye, but the whole play was perfect from the Red Bulls. Tyler Adams worked hard in midfield to retrieve the ball before Sean Davis played a delightful ball over the top to Bradley Wright-Phillips. BWP had his effort saved before Kaku finished the move:
Are there any goals you feel have undeservedly missed out on this short list? Feel free to let me know on Twitter. I’m all ears.
