This morning, David Beckham’s MLS franchise revealed their name as Inter Miami CF – as well as the club badge which was pretty much public knowledge already.
The badge is absolutely stunning and has been heavily admired online. The club’s official twitter account tweeted a breakdown, explaining each detail of the team’s identity.
Reactions to the club’s name have been very much a different story. Since the team is owned by David Beckham and the announcement was made whilst most Americans were asleep, my fellow Brits were given the chance to share their reactions first.
I saw some questioning why a team in an English speaking country have given themselves a Spanish name – obviously oblivious to the fact that Miami is heavily-populated by Spanish speakers.
A lot of people have taken issue with the use of ‘Inter’, suggesting that it has been ripped from Inter Milan. If people would just look a bit deeper they would realise that the Italian club’s name is short for ‘Internazionale’ and Beckham’s team name is clearly a shortened version of ‘Internacional’. Would they argue that AFC Wimbledon have copied AFC Bournemouth? I doubt it.
Personally, I’m not a huge fan of the name. But honestly? I don’t really care, I just want to see some pink kits that I’m ready to buy. My only pet peeve is the overuse of ‘football’ – or ‘futbol’ in this case – within Major League Soccer. The country is proud to use the word soccer (rightly so) so it annoys me when club’s choose to ignore their identity when it comes to team names.
Anyway, enough of me rambling on. Here is some of this morning’s reactions below:
